Strike of luck, or strike of genius?

I was with Hector in my old room in Puebla. Giovanni (Hector's neighbor who is now in the Federal Police) was with us. He wanted to work with us. We had set up a web design and development shop. I interviewed him without much hope as I've always known him to be dull. I put forth a very tough problem. He thought about it a couple of seconds and came back with a Regex expression that solved it in the most concise way possible. I was puzzled: was it a strike of luck, or a strike of genius? Hector was adamant that it was luck, I wasn't sure.
